Advances in measuring ocean salinity with an optical sensor ArchiMer
Le Menn, Marc; De La Tocnaye, J. L. De Bougrenet; Grosso, P.; Delauney, Laurent; Podeur, Christian; Brault, P.; Guillerme, O..
Absolute salinity measurement of seawater has become a key issue in thermodynamic models of the oceans. One of the most direct ways is to measure the seawater refractive index which is related to density and can therefore be related to the absolute salinity. Recent advances in high resolution position sensitive devices enable us to take advantage of small beam deviation measurements using refractometers. This paper assesses the advantages of such technology with respect to the current state-of-the-art technology. In particular, we present the resolution dependence on refractive index variations and derive the limits of such a solution for designing seawater sensors well suited for coastal and deep-sea applications. Particular attention has been paid to...

Le projet Equipex NAOS : l'observation globale des océans Préparation de la nouvelle décennie d'Argo ArchiMer
Le Traon, Pierre-yves; D'Ortenzio, Fabrizio; Babin, Marcel; Claustre, Hervé; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Le Reste, Serge; Thierry, Virginie; Brault, Patrice; Guigue, Michel; Le Menn, Marc.
NAOS (Novel Argo Ocean observing System) is one of the 52 projects selected as part of the Equipex call for proposals from the French programme d'investissements d'avenir. The overall objective of the project is to consolidate and improve the French and European contribution to the international Argo observing system and to prepare the next decade of Argo. The challenge is to set up an effective monitoring of the world ocean and to strengthen French leadership in ocean and climate research and prediction.

Preparing the New Phase of Argo: Technological Developments on Profiling Floats in the NAOS Project ArchiMer
André, Xavier; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Le Reste, Serge; Dutreuil, Vincent; Leymarie, Edouard; Malardé, Damien; Marec, Claudie; Sagot, Jérôme; Amice, Martin; Babin, Marcel; Claustre, Hervé; David, Arnaud; D’ortenzio, Fabrizio; Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Lagunas, José Luis; Le Menn, Marc; Moreau, Bertrand; Nogré, David; Penkerc’h, Christophe; Poteau, Antoine; Renaut, Corentin; Schaeffer, Christophe; Taillandier, Vincent; Thierry, Virginie.
The international array of profiling floats known as Argo is a major component of the global ocean- and climate-observing system. In 2010, the NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project was selected as part of France’s Equipex “Investissement d’Avenir” program. The objectives of NAOS were to consolidate the French contribution to the Argo core mission (global temperature and salinity measurements down to 2,000 m) as well as to develop the future generation of French Argo profiling floats and prepare the next phase of the Argo program with an extension to the deep ocean (Deep-Argo), biogeochemistry (BGC-Argo) and polar seas. This paper summarizes the main technological advances and at-sea validations carried out as part of NAOS: development of a deep (4,000...

PROTEVS-MED field experiments: very high resolution hydrographic surveys in the Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Correard, Stéphanie; Fercocq, Solenn; Le Menn, Marc; Serpette, Alain; Garnier, Valerie; Stegner, Alexandre; Le Vu, Briac; Doglioli, Andrea; Gregori, Gerald.
From 2015 to 2018 four field experiments (seven legs) were performed in the Western Mediterranean basin during winter or early spring. The main objectives were the assessment of high-resolution modeling and the observation of mesoscale structure and associated ageostrophic dynamics. Thanks to the intensive use of a towed vehicle undulating in the upper oceanic layer between 0 and 400 m depth (SeaSoar), a large number of very high resolution hydrographic transects (total length about 10 000 km) were measured, observing mesoscale dynamics (slope current and its instabilities, anticyclonic eddies, submesoscale coherent vortices, frontal dynamics, convection events, strait outflows) and submesoscale processes like stirring, mixed-layer or symmetric...

Sea Surface Salinity from French RESearcH Vessels : Delayed mode dataset, annual release ArchiMer
Gaillard, Fabienne; Diverres, Denis; Jacquin, Stéphane; Gouriou, Yves; Grelet, Jacques; Le Menn, Marc; Tassel, Joelle; Reverdin, Gilles.
French Research vessels have been collecting thermo-salinometer (TSG) data since the early 2000 in contribution to the GOSUD programme. The set of homogeneous instruments is permanently monitored and regularly calibrated. Water samples are taken on a daily basis by the crew and later analysed in the laboratory. We present here the delayed mode processing of the 2001-2013 dataset and an overview of the resulting quality. The careful calibration and instrument maintenance, complemented with a rigorous adjustment on water samples lead to reach an accuracy of a few 10-² PSS in salinity or evenless. Global comparison with the ISAS13 ARGO gridded product shows an excellent agreement of the datasets. The SSS-Fresh dataset appears as highly valuable for the...

Sea surface temperature and salinity from French research vessels, 2001–2013 ArchiMer
Gaillard, Fabienne; Diverres, Denis; Jacquin, Stephane; Gouriou, Yves; Grelet, Jacques; Le Menn, Marc; Tassel, Joelle; Reverdin, Gilles.
French Research vessels have been collecting thermo-salinometer (TSG) data since 1999 to contribute to the Global Ocean Surface Underway Data (GOSUD) programme. The instruments are regularly calibrated and continuously monitored. Water samples are taken on a daily basis by the crew and later analysed in the laboratory. We present here the delayed mode processing of the 2001–2013 dataset and an overview of the resulting quality. Salinity measurement error was a few hundredths of a unit or less on the practical salinity scale (PSS), due to careful calibration and instrument maintenance, complemented with a rigorous adjustment on water samples. In a global comparison, these data show excellent agreement with an ARGO-based salinity gridded product. The Sea...
